EDUCAUSE is the sole registrar for names in the .edu domain. The Department of Commerce awarded management of the domain to EDUCAUSE in October 2001.

Eligible institutions and holders of .edu domain names can register​ and manage​ their .edu domains at the .edu Administration Portal.

EDUCAUSE is also the exclusive provider of contact information for the .edu domain, available in the Whois Lookup database.

If you already have a .edu domain name and wish to apply for a second one, please log into your registrant account and submit an application using the menu option for second domain name registration. DO NOT submit an application via the “Request a New Domain” page – since you already have a registrant account, the second domain name you register must be associated with that account.

Note: This is an application to register a .edu domain name. Registering a .edu domain name does not establish ownership rights to the name, but rather allows you to use the domain name for the registration period. You will have the opportunity to renew your registration for subsequent registration periods subject to the terms and conditions established in the .edu Customer Service Agreement as well as domain policy as presented in the .edu Cooperative Agreement.

Once you have submitted the registration application the system will obtain an “Authorization code” for the registration fee. This is to determine whether the card number you provided is valid. Your card will not be charged unless and until the application has been approved.
